Finding Fulfillment and Focus
2020 has certainly been a trying year. With a global pandemic threatening our health, and civic unrest sweeping the nation, there’s no denying we’re feeling tense as a country. Anxiety medication prescriptions have spiked, and people in general are burnt out and overwhelmed. With so much going on in the world it’s difficult to concentrate on anything, particularly work.
But work can actually be one of the most fulfilling aspects of our lives right now. Defining a goal to work towards can positively benefit us, providing a sense of accomplishment and purpose. The key is blocking out all the noise long enough to focus on the work itself. Here’s some great strategies to accomplish that goal:
Set Boundaries
We’re bombarded with information all the time, but too much negativity can leave us feeling overwhelmed. Every text, news alert, and update makes focusing on anything impossible. Consider setting physical and time based boundaries. For example, set aside 30 minutes for news in the morning, and another short session in the evening. While you’re working, avoid checking for updates and alerts.
Recognize the Part You Play
Extreme disruptions to our schedule can make us question our value. Recognize the role you fill within your organization and the world. Each day, you’re working towards a better future for yourself, your family, your co-workers, your company, and your community.
Work on Projects You Enjoy
Many companies have experienced slow downs. If there’s a project you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t had the time, this could be your opportunity. Or maybe you have a great idea to try out. This is a new experience for all of us. Thinking outside the box is not only allowed, but encouraged!
Aim to Help
It’s been proven helping others leads to happier, more successful people. Keep an eye out for opportunities to help those around you, or support your community through volunteer work. Knowing you’ve made a real difference goes a long way towards feeling fulfilled.
Celebrate Work Successes
It’s time to find the silver lining. There are always achievements worth celebrating! Did you and your team accomplish a difficult task you’ve been putting off for months? Did a redesign project turn out even better than you thought it would? Celebrate your victories, large and small!
We’ve been using the tips above to stay sane and productive over the last few months, as well as leveraging our own behavior for success. Behavioral Awareness helps people and teams more easily adapt to changing environments. At Know Your Talents we teach leaders how this knowledge can be utilized to improve an organization’s flexibility, and ultimately success. We’d love to share that knowledge with you!
