Simple shifts to help your team feel supported
Most leaders are so focused on forward moving productions or development, that they can miss some key elements to being a powerful leader. Taking the time to make sure everyone is on the same page can drum up feelings of stagnation and fear of loss of time.
So why do it, Right?
As you can guess, confusion can cost the business big time. If the business teams or managers are unclear on vision or goals, they can make costly mistakes and waist time. In the article “Lazy Leaders and heroic managers” by Elsbeth Johnson, she shares with us her 3 key issues that often fail middle managers. By a couple of simple shifts, you can change the direction and delegate more effectively with these 3 steps.
- Be clear on targeted outcomes, make sure the goals are outcome based not activity based. They should have financial targets and are ambitious enough with adequate time frames to create the change.
- Be realistic. Make sure the timelines and costs are realistic, if we set the expectations to high, we set people up to fail. Expecting too much too soon will change the morale and the drive of your managers creating a culture of short-term results and errors. In the long run see inconsistencies and burn out the middle management to the point where you might see turnover. Remember the project delivery triangle, Time, Resources, and Outcome to make it easier to assess realistic goals.
- Be consistent. It can feel a bit redundant but repeating the new strategy several times for people to hear it before it is understood is normal. If not repeated, we can run the risk of it being interpreted as leadership having inconsistency.
